CENTRAL AND NORTHERN LESVOS

print information send to friend

You will stay in Molyvos, a medieval village on the northern point of the island, with a characteristic stone-built architecture, and a Byzantine fortress, overlooking the Asia Minor right across. Starting from here, you walk each day in different terrains, in order to meet the most out of the immense beauty of the island.

The itinerary is balanced, emphasizing on exercising, while indulging in good life.

Picturesque villages, arched bridges, old water mills, Byzantine monasteries, frescoed churches, ancient ruins, panoramic views, volcanic formations, all via a network of stone-built mulepaths and hillside treks, which meander through a botanic paradise.

Day 1
After you arrive in Lesvos, you will be transfered to your accommodation in Molyvos. Welcome dinner under the majestic view of the lighted castle.

Day 2

We start our easy day hike, at the village Petra, with the interesting architecture and impressive churches. After a guide round, through the narrow cobled streets, we join the path to the valley of Ligonas. We walk all the way up the green valley with the 17 stone water mills, on the same trails used by muleteers for centuries, through colorful meadows and shepherd's huts. We'll take a moment to enjoy the amazing view on the plateau of St. Dimitris before we continue to the settlement of Vafios. Traditional lunch, in an idyllic garden, facing Molyvos.(7,5 km)

Day 3
Todays walk focuses on the Byzantine monasteries. After a short drive, we follow a wood path to a 16 th century monastery near Kalloni and on to the next one, of the same period hosting, a magnificent collection of Byzantine icons and manuscripts. We go down the valley of Christos, following the stream which leads us to a plain full of wild flowers and aquatic birds, some rare, as this is part of the Natura 2000 wetlands of the gulf of Kalloni. At the small harbor, of Skala Kalloni, we can sip our ouzo, at a nice tavern, by the sea, tasting delicious seafood, something the gulf was famous for since antiquity. (15km)

Day 4
Today we're going to explore the mythic mountain Lepetymnos, dotted with beautiful little villages. We take the road round making small stops, to visit a honey family-owned industry, the fresh water springs and a traditional bakery, before we start climbing. On the peak of Vigla the view is amazing as we can see most of the island. Going downhill through oaks and herbs, we meet Sykamnia, built on a high altitude facing the Asia Minor. Dazzled by the beauty of the scenery, as we are, we continue in the olive groves, until we reach the little harbor with the white washed chapel on the rock and the fish taverns sharing the shade of the huge mulberry tree. (11km)

Day 5
Our cultural path, today, brings us to one of the most interesting villages-in terms of arts and craft, as well as spiritual and botanic prosperity. Whatever grows on Lesvos, from vast olive groves, pine and chestnut forests, oaks, plane trees, walnut trees, cherry trees, sour apple trees, quince trees, to wild flowers and herbs, some endemic, you will find it here, on the slops of Mt. Olympos, nourished by the spring waters all year round. Following the stone built path we'll find ourselves in a heavenly place, where the only sounds we can hear are those of birds and streams. Next stop is at the picturesque village Asomatos, also well known for traditional crafts. Our route ends with a visit to an old water mill, still moving in the same traditional way. (10 km)

Day 6
On our last day, we visit Agia Paraskevi, a capital village with characteristic architecture. Here is where we start to walk, heading to the ancient temple of god Apollo, built in the unique Aeolian style. The path is parallel to the river Tsianas, with many chapels on the way and small shepherds huts. Further up we come across the spectacular arched bridge of Kremasti, proudly coronating the point where, the rivers Tsianas and Kakaras, join. The journey ends with a nice meal at the sunny square of Agia Paraskevi. On our way back, we make a stop at Kalloni's saltpans, to picture the flamingoes. A special night comes along, with lots of Greek dancing!

Day 7
Flight times permitting, we stop at Mytilini-capital city- for sightseeing, on our way to the airport. If you wish to stay over night, to visit the museums, the cathedral, the castle, the ancient theater or to walk in the old market street please advise.
